1064. γαστήρ [deriv. uncertain] I. the paunch, belly, Lat. venter, Hom., etc.: hence, γ. ἀσπίδος the hollow of a shield, Tyrtae.:—often to express greed or gluttony, γαστέρες οἶον mere bellies, Hes.; γαστρὸς ἐγκρατής master of his belly, γαστρὸς ἥττων a slave to it, Xen.
