I. mostly of persons,
1. to take or receive from another, τί τινι Il., Aesch.
2. to take up, of a successor, τὴν ἀρχὴν παρά τινος Hdt., etc.; often also with the acc. omitted, ἐξεδέξατο Σαδυάττης (sc. τὴν βασιληΐην) he succeeded, id=Hdt.
3. to take up the argument, ὥσπερ σφαῖραν ἐκδ. τὸν λόγον Plat.
4. to wait for, expect, Soph.
II. of events, to await, Lat. excipere, Hdt.
