4396. προφήτης [πρόφημι] I. one who speaks for a God and interprets his will to man, a prophet; so Teiresias is πρ. Διός, Jove's interpreter, Pind.; and of Apollo, Διὸς προφήτης ἐστὶ Λοξίας πατρός Aesch.; while the Pythia, in turn, became the προφῆτις of Apollo, Hdt.; so Poets are called οἱ τῶν Μουσῶν προφῆται interpreters of the Muses, Plat.
2. generally, an interpreter, declarer, ἐγὼ πρ. σοι λόγων γενήσομαι Eur.; so, the bowl is called κώμου προφάτης, Pind.
II. in NTest.,
1. one who possesses the gift of προφητεία, an inspired preacher and teacher.
2. the revealer of God's counsel for the future, a prophet (in the modern sense of the word), a predicter of future events.
