II. intr. to stumble, trip, fall, Soph., etc.; πτ. πρός τινι to stumble against, fall over, Aesch., Plat.; πρός τι Xen.; also, μὴ περὶ Μαρδονίωι πταίσηι ἡ Ἑλλάς lest Hellas should get a fall over him, i.e. be defeated by him, Hdt.
