5092. τιμή τι_μή, ἡ, [τίω] I. that which is paid in token of worth or value:
1. worship, esteem, honour, and in pl. honours, Hom., etc.; ἐν τ. ἄγεσθαι, τίθεσθαι τινά Hdt.; ἀπονέμειν, ἀποδοῦναι Soph., Plat.:—c. gen., ἡ τ. θεῶν the honour due to them, Aesch.
2. honour, dignity, lordship, Hom.:— the prerogative of a king, and in pl. prerogatives, Od., Trag.
3. a dignity, office, magistracy, and in pl., like Lat. honores, civil honours, Hdt., attic; οἱ ἐν τιμαῖς men in office, Eur.; τιμὴ ἄχαρις a thankless office, Hdt.
4. an authority, magistracy, τ. δίσκηπτρος, of the Atridae, Aesch., Soph.
5. a present of honour, offering, Hes., Aesch.: a reward, present, Lat. honorarium, Soph.
II. of things, worth, value, or price, Lat. pretium, ἐξευρίσκειν τιμῆς τι to get a thing at a price (i. e. a high price), Hdt.; ἐμοὶ δὲ τιμὰ τᾶσδε πᾶ γενήσεται; how shall I get payment for this? Ar.
III. an estimate of damages, compensation, ἄρνυσθαί τινι τιμήν to get one compensation, Il.; τίνειν or ἀποτίνειν τιμήν τινι to pay or make it, id=Il.; οὐ σὴ ἡ τιμή not yours the penalty, Plat.
2. a valuation, estimate, for purposes of assessment, τοῦ κλήρου id=Plat.
