apogee. Apogee, n. the point of the sun's &c orbit farthest from the earth

Ap″o‐gee (�), n. [[Gr. � from the earth; � from + �, �, earth: cf. F. apogée.]] 1. 1. (Astron.) That point in the orbit of the moon which is at the greatest distance from the earth.
☞ Formerly, on the hypothesis that the earth is in the center of the system, this name was given to that point in the orbit of the sun, or of a planet, which was supposed to be at the greatest distance from the earth. 2. 2. Fig.: The farthest or highest point; culmination.
