Cat″a‐pult (?), n. [[L. catapulta, Gr. �, prob. from κατά down + � to shake, hurl.]] 1. 1. (Mil. Antiq.) An engine somewhat resembling a massive crossbow, used by the ancient Greeks and Romans for throwing stones, arrows, spears, etc.
