Jethro
The priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, who brought practical wisdom to the wilderness community — suggesting the delegation structure that allowed Moses to govern a nation without breaking under the weight.
The Advisor from Outside
Scripture: Exodus 18
The Biblical Record
Jethro heard all that YHWH had done for Moses and for Israel. He came to Moses in the wilderness, bringing Moses's wife and sons. He watched Moses judge the people from morning until evening, the people standing around him all day. He said: what you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. He proposed a structure of judges for thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens — with Moses handling only the most difficult cases. Moses listened. He did everything Jethro said.
Jethro in the Sanctum
Jethro is the wisdom-bearer from outside the covenant community — the one who sees clearly because he is not too close to see. His practical counsel on delegation is one of the most useful administrative passages in Scripture. The Sanctum treats him as evidence that wisdom is where YHWH places it, including outside expected channels.
