Zephaniah

The prophet of the great day of the LORD who descended from Hezekiah, prophesied under Josiah's reign, and sang of a day when YHWH would rejoice over His people with singing.

The Day of the LORD

Scripture: Zephaniah 1-3

The Biblical Record

Zephaniah opens with some of the most severe language in the prophetic literature: I will utterly sweep away everything from the face of the earth. The great day of the LORD is near — a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation. But the book does not end there. It ends with one of the most stunning reversals in Scripture: YHWH your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Zephaniah in the Sanctum

Zephaniah holds together the sternness and the tenderness of YHWH. The God who sweeps away is the same God who sings. The Sanctum uses Zephaniah's closing verses as its picture of the restored relationship: YHWH rejoicing over His people, quieting them with His love.
