Abigail

The wife of Nabal who loaded donkeys with food and rode out to intercept David before his anger carried him to bloodshed — described in Scripture as a woman of good understanding and beautiful countenance.

The Peacemaker

Scripture: 1 Samuel 25

The Biblical Record

Nabal was churlish and evil in his doings. He had refused David's messengers despite David's protection of his flocks. David was riding to wipe out every male of Nabal's household when Abigail received the news from a servant. She did not argue with her husband or wait for him to act. She loaded five donkeys with food — bread, wine, sheep, grain, raisins, figs — and rode down to meet David. She got off her donkey and fell before him on her face and said: upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be. She talked him down from the violence. She reasoned from YHWH's character and David's future. He listened.

Abigail in the Sanctum

Abigail is the figure of wisdom that defuses violence — the one who acts on information, moves fast, and speaks truth to power without losing respect. Her intervention is a model of peacemaking that the Sanctum treats as a distinctly biblical form of courage.
