Jehoshaphat

The good king of Judah who sought YHWH, removed the high places and Asherah poles, and prayed one of the greatest prayers in Chronicles when three armies came against him: we do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.

The Prayerful King

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 17-20

The Biblical Record

The Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites — a vast army — came to make war against Jehoshaphat. He was afraid and set himself to seek YHWH, proclaiming a fast throughout Judah. They came together to seek help from YHWH. And Jehoshaphat stood before the assembly and prayed: we do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. The word came through Jahaziel: do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle is not yours but God's. Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to YHWH and praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army.

Jehoshaphat in the Sanctum

Jehoshaphat's prayer — we do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you — is one of the most honest statements of dependence in Scripture. The Sanctum uses his story as the model of warfare that begins in the throne room before it reaches the battlefield.
