Joel
The Hebrew prophet whose name means YHWH is God, whose vision of the locust plague and the outpouring of the Spirit was quoted by Peter at Pentecost: 'And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.'
The Pentecost Prophet
Scripture: Joel 1-3
The Biblical Record
Joel's prophecy is structured around a plague of locusts that may be literal, symbolic, or both. He calls Israel to repentance — tear your hearts, not your garments. And then he speaks a word that reaches past his own generation: 'I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.' This word waited centuries for its fulfillment. On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood up and said: this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.
Joel in the Sanctum
Joel is the prophet of the outpouring — the one who first announced that the Spirit of YHWH would be poured on all people without distinction of age, gender, or social status. The Sanctum treats his prophecy as foundational to understanding what the church is: the community where Joel's vision is being fulfilled.
