Josiah

The reforming king of Judah who became king at eight years old, repaired the Temple, discovered the Book of the Law, tore his robes when he heard it, and drove the most sweeping religious reform in Judah's history.

The Reforming King

Scripture: 2 Kings 22-23; 2 Chronicles 34-35

The Biblical Record

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign. At sixteen he began to seek YHWH. At twenty he began to purge the high places. At twenty-six his workers found a scroll while repairing the Temple. The priests brought it to the king. He read it. He tore his robes. He sent a delegation to the prophetess Huldah, who delivered the word: because your heart was penitent and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard how I spoke against this place, I also have heard you. The reforms that followed were more comprehensive than anything since the time of Samuel.

Josiah in the Sanctum

Josiah is the figure of the reforming leader — the one who inherits a broken system, discovers the Word that exposes the extent of the brokenness, and acts with urgency and thoroughness. His story is a pattern for every generation that opens Scripture and finds it speaking judgment on inherited religious corruption.
