Samuel

The last judge and first of the prophets — dedicated to YHWH before his birth, called by name in the night, who anointed both Saul and David and whose word let none fall to the ground.

The Prophet Who Anoints

Scripture: 1 Samuel 1-25

The Biblical Record

Samuel's story begins before his birth. Hannah, his barren mother, prayed in bitter weeping at Shiloh and vowed that if YHWH gave her a son she would give him back. YHWH remembered Hannah. She conceived. She named the child Samuel — heard by God — and when he was weaned she brought him to Eli at Shiloh. The LORD called Samuel in the night three times before Samuel understood who was speaking. Eli told him: go, lie down, and if he calls you, say: Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening. All Israel recognized that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD. His word let none fall to the ground.

Samuel in the Sanctum

Samuel is the figure of the transition — the last judge who anointed the first and second kings, the prophet who spoke the word that cut off Saul and established David. His grief over Saul and his discernment of David's heart (not the outward appearance but the heart) are central to the Sanctum's treatment of spiritual authority.
