Israel, Covenant Nation
YHWH chose a people, not because they were the greatest (He says so explicitly) but because He is faithful to His word. From Abraham to the New Jerusalem, Israel is the spine of redemptive history.
YHWH's Covenant from Genesis to Revelation
The story of Israel is a covenant YHWH refused to break even when every human party did. Genesis 12: I will make you a great nation. Genesis 15: the smoking firepot and flaming torch pass between the pieces alone, YHWH binds Himself unilaterally. The kings fail. The prophets warn. The exile comes. And YHWH still says through Jeremiah: I have loved you with an everlasting love. The covenant was not contingent on Israel's faithfulness. It was contingent on YHWH's.
Seven Pillars of Israel's Story
- Election, YHWH chose Israel not for their greatness but for His faithfulness to Abraham (Deuteronomy 7:6-8). Election is about covenant, not merit.
- Covenant, Abrahamic, Mosaic, and Davidic covenants form the backbone. Each is progressively more specific about how the blessing reaches all nations.
- Land, the Land of Israel is covenantal, not incidental. Genesis 15, the boundaries, exile, restoration in Ezekiel 36-37, the Land is part of the promise.
- Torah, the Law at Sinai is a gift. "What nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way YHWH our God is near us?" (Deuteronomy 4:7).
- Temple, from tabernacle through Solomon's Temple to the body of Christ to the New Jerusalem, YHWH dwelling with His people is the trajectory.
- Exile and Return, exile was judgment, not abandonment. YHWH said it would happen (Leviticus 26) and said He would restore (Deuteronomy 30).
- Restoration, Ezekiel 36-37, Zechariah, Romans 11. YHWH has not cast away His people. A partial hardening until the fullness of the Gentiles, then all Israel will be saved.
The Church Grafted In
"If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches." (Romans 11:17-18)
The church does not replace Israel. It is grafted into the same root, the Abrahamic covenant. The study of Israel is not a detour from the gospel; it is the context without which the gospel is incomprehensible. Statement of faith summary: /beliefs.
