Wild Goat and Ibex
The high-country creature of inaccessible cliffs, who gives birth in the hidden wilderness without midwife or keeper, who Psalm 104 says YHWH made the high mountains for, who inhabits En-gedi's Crags of the Wild Goats where David hid from Saul, and whose birthing schedule YHWH asks Job whether he knows.
1 Samuel 24:2, Job 39:1–4, Psalm 104:18, Deuteronomy 14:5

Wild Goat and Ibex in Scripture
The Hebrew terms, יָעֵל (ya'el, wild goat or ibex) appears most prominently in the Job passage and in the place name En-gedi. אַקּוֹ (akko, wild goat or ibex of a different species) appears in the Deuteronomy clean-animal list. The Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) is the most likely species at En-gedi, the steep limestone cliffs of the Judean wilderness above the Dead Sea are precisely the ibex habitat. The wild goat is distinct from the domestic goat (ez) by its habitat (cliff faces, inaccessible terrain), its wild nature, and its independence from human management.
The Crags of the Wild Goats, 1 Samuel 24:2, "Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats." David is hiding in the wilderness of En-gedi. The location is named for the wild goat, the cliffs above the En-gedi oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea, where ibex still graze on vertical limestone faces today. David hides in the terrain of the ibex, the inaccessible vertical world where the pursued creature finds safety. In the cave Saul enters to relieve himself, David cuts the corner of his robe rather than killing him.
YHWH's speech on the mountain goats, Job 39:1–4, "Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the does? Can you number the months that they fulfill, and do you know the time when they give birth, when they crouch, bring forth their offspring, and are delivered of their young? Their young ones become strong; they grow up in the open; they go out and do not return to them." YHWH's question to Job is not academic; it is the argument from hidden life. The wild goat gives birth in the wilderness without any human observer, keeper, or midwife. YHWH knows when this happens; Job does not. The hidden birthing of the ibex in the inaccessible cliffs is one of YHWH's demonstrations that creation operates continuously in registers Job cannot see or govern.
For the high mountains, Psalm 104:18, "The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock hyrax." The ibex and the hyrax together are the creatures for whom YHWH made the high rocky terrain. The mountain heights are not wasted real estate, they are provided habitat. The wild goat's cliff-climbing capacity is the reason YHWH's provision can be delivered at vertical altitude.
Clean for eating, Deuteronomy 14:5, The wild goat (ya'el or akko) is listed among the clean animals permitted for eating: deer, gazelle, roebuck, wild goat, ibex, antelope, and mountain sheep. The wild goat is huntable and permitted, the alternative livestock of the wilderness regions beyond the settled agricultural land.
Poetic use, Proverbs 5:19; Song of Songs 4:1, The grace of the wild goat and gazelle appears in the wisdom literature's poetry. Proverbs 5:19 compares the beloved wife to "a graceful doe, a lovely deer." Song of Songs 4:1: "Your hair is like a flock of goats leaping down the slopes of Gilead." The ibex's movement on a cliff face, fluid, sure, visually striking, becomes an image for natural gracefulness in the poetry of the Song.
Wild Goat and Ibex in the Sanctum
The wild goat is the creature of the inaccessible heights, for whom YHWH made the high mountains, whose hidden birthing schedule is part of YHWH's argument to Job from the unseen creation, and whose crags above En-gedi shelter David from Saul. The Sanctum holds it as Canon-tier: the ibex of the vertical world, whose life runs in the register that human oversight cannot reach.
